Wintering is a comforting meditation and reassuring reflection on the dormant phases of our lives. We need to withdraw and restore ourselves. Katherine May provides insightful guidance on navigating these periods, recognising that, like the seasons, our winters and summers are natural life cycles.
In our project for Penguin UK, we took on the challenge of redesigning the our original hardback cover for Katherine May’s Wintering. While the original aesthetic captured the quiet nature of the text, the brief for the paperback was to retain the existing feel while adding more colour. Moving away from a more muted palette, we developed a high-contrast, illustrative approach that retains the book’s soulful essence while injecting a brighter design required for a commercial bestseller. By leaning into bolder hues and a vibrant illustrative language, we transformed a meditation into a more visual statement.
